VISITING A NEW MOM? HERE’S 5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Visiting a new mom can be tricky. Your thoughts and intentions might be pure but there’s so much more to it; are you going at the right time? Should your carry a gift along, what do you not say? etc. if you have plans to visit a new mom, then here’s five things you ought to know:
BRING A GIFT FOR MOMMY
Make sure you visit a new mom with a gift. Most times, people gift the baby and forget about the mom (well a gift for the baby does make the mom happy), however, it would not hurt to go with a gift for the baby and something thoughtful on the side for the new mom.
MAKE YOURSELF USEFUL
Generally, a new mom is often tired but courtesy demands she attend to visitors and well-wishers. Whenever you visit, you could try holding the baby while she rests, help care for and watch the older children (if they have any), or help around with chores. Always find one way or another to help around, that way, the new mom can rest. Trust me, she would be very grateful for your help.
DO NOT KISS THE BABY
When we see babies, it is normal human nature to want to cuddle them, kiss them and never let them go (I mean, they are soooo cute!!!). However, for health reasons, it is better to desist from kissing babies. If you must, you can kiss their toes as opposed to kissing them on the lips or face as most would.
ASK FOR A GOOD TIME TO DROP BY
Every new mom has a timeline when she’s willing to accept visitors. A good number of us do not put this into consideration before visiting, we just drop by. As much as your intentions are pure, you’re encroaching into a new mom’s space at a time that is inconvenient for her. Before visiting, make contact and ensure you’re expected at the time of your visit.
KEEP YOUR OPINION AT HOME
The last thing a new mom needs is all the unsolicited advice. Some might be good but a good number of them could come off as insensitive so it is better to hold your thoughts and opinions until you’re asked to give it.
