How to Get Gum out of Your Child’s Hair Without Cutting It
You know when you chew gum and you leave it lying around. Possibly because you forgot to dispose of it properly. Your child somehow gets it stuck in her hair and you have to figure out a way to get it out. But, having gum in the hair can be a nuisance, and a frustrating one at that. You try to remove it but it tugs and pulls at her hair. Painfully. In that instance, it seems the only possible solution is to cut the hair. That would be an easy solution. But, there are ways you can get the gum out of the hair without cutting it. Here are four ways.
1. Use Vinegar
Lather the gummed area with vinegar. You can either dip the hair in a cup of vinegar or soak a cloth in it and place the cloth on her hair. Leave it for a while. The length of time it’ll take depends on how much gum is in the hair. To make it even faster, heat the vinegar up a little bit. This is a very effective remedy; it breaks the bond between the hair and the gum. Warning: it leaves a strong odor behind, so you may have to wash the hair after.
2. Cooking Oils
Three cooking oils you can use to remove gum from hair: olive oil, coconut oil, and canola oil. Oils are hydrophobic i.e. they don’t dissolve in water; they help by breaking down the stickiness in the gum. Apply some oil to the affected area and rub it in gently. Then use a comb or your fingers to remove the gum. Don’t forget to wash the hair after so you don’t leave your child smelling like fried fish.

3. Peanut Butter
Peanut butter, like cooking oils, is also hydrophobic. Chewing gums are hydrophobic too. This similar characteristic makes it easier to stick to each other. Peanut butter also helps reduce the gum's stickiness. Completely cover the affected area with peanut butter, work it in with your fingers and leave for a few minutes. Soon enough, the gum becomes stiff and easier to detach from the hair.
4. Ice
You can also remove gum from the hair with the use of ice cubes. The ice will freeze the gum off, making it stiff and easy to remove. There are two ways you can do this: either you apply a pack of ice to the affected area of the hair for 5 to 15 minutes or you can wrap her hair with ice in a fabric.
How does it feel to know that what you need to solve the problem is right there in your house? And to think you almost cut the hair! Note that you can do this with your hair, too.
