It is not new news that chocolate makes everyone happy, hence why we all love to indulge in it all the time. Chocolate is made from tropical theobroma cacao tree seeds. It has since become a popular food item that millions enjoy every day. But what effect does chocolate have on your health? Some argue chocolate is nutritional and beneficial while others argue it is not. Today we Weill look at the pros and cons of chocolate to our health.

FIRST THE PROS:

IT IS A POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANT

Chocolate especially dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants like polyphenols, flavonoids and catechins, amongst others. This helps the body to fight free radicals when consumed.

CHOCOLATE MAY IMPROVE BLOOD FLOW

The flavonoids in dark chocolate can simulate the endothelium, the lining of the arteries, to produce nitric oxide (NO).

One function of nitric oxide is to send signals to the arteries to relax, which lowers resistance to blood flow and therefore reduces blood pressure.
In summary, the radioactive compounds in cocoa may improve blood flow in the arteries and cause a small but statistically significant decrease in blood pressure.

MAY IMPROVE BRAIN FUNCTION

The good news isn’t over, dark chocolate may also improve the function of your brain by increasing blood flow. Chocolate also contains stimulants like caffeine and theobromine which could be a key reason for its effects on brain function.

NOW, THE CONS:

UNDECLARED ALLERGENS

Many chocolate bars contain undeclared allergens like nuts and milk. This might end up causing severe allergies for people who are unaware.

IT IS CALORIE DENSE

Chocolate is rich in sugar, unhealthy fats and empty calories. While they are nice eat, you might have to deal with a little more weight and complications that come with obesity.

BE WARY OF THE CAFFEINE

Chocolate contains caffeine and related chemicals which can cause side effects such as nervousness, increased urination, sleeplessness, and a fast heartbeat especially when consumed in large amounts.
