SKINCARE INGREDIENTS TO AVOID DURING PREGNANCY

In recent times, eliminating toxic ingredients from beauty products is becoming the norm. People are paying more attention to what comes in contact with their skin. That aside, these ingredients can also affect someone else, someone who has no say in the beauty choices of the larger person. This is the case of pregnant women. There are so many ingredients in skincare products that are not so great for the baby.

Sadly, your skinny jeans are not all you may have to dump for the next nine months, certain beauty items have to go as well. Here are some dermatologist recommended ingredients to ditch:

RETINOIDS

Retinoids (also known as Tretinoin) are a class of vitamin A that boosts skin cell regeneration and prevents collagen breakdown. Topical use of retinoids have not been shown to cause concern but oral retinoids should be avoided. High doses of oral retinoids such as isotretinoin are known to cause birth defects. Other forms of retinoids to avoid include:

• Panretin (alotretinoin)
• Retin- A, Renova (Tretinoin)
• Retinoic acid
• Retinol
• Retiny lineolate
• Retiny palmitate
• Targetjn gel (bexarotene)
• Avage, Fabior, Tazorac (Tazatotene)
• Avita (Tretinoin)
• Differin (Adapalene)

SALICYLIC ACID

Products such as cleansers and toners containing salicylic acid can be used moderately during pregnancy. Doctors however recommend using products containing 2% salicylic acid and no more! Salicylic acid in its oral form should however be paused. Salicylic acid is an ingredient in aspirin so high doses of aspirin should also be avoided.

HYDROQUINONE

Pregnancy can cause a lot of things. One of them is increased sensitivity to smell. Some women can find essential oils overwhelming and the scent can trigger nausea. They could also cause uterine contractions or affect your body in early developmental stages. Not all essential oils are bad. Some good ones include:

• Lavender oil
• Rose oil
• Peppermint oil
• Chamomile Oil
• Lemon oil
• Geranium oil
• Frankincense, etc.
